Since its inception by an act of Congress in 1986, it has been one of the most popular bullion coins in the world. It is approximately the size of a 50¢ piece and showcases Saint-Gaudens’ timeless Lady Liberty on the obverse. The reverse depicts the namesake Eagle, the coin’s troy weight, and the nominal face value of $50. While containing a full troy ounce of gold, the Eagle weighs a bit more than a troy ounce. It is minted in the 1986 legislated gold alloy of 91.67% gold, with the remaining mix in silver and copper. This makes the coin stronger and the surface less likely to scuff from mishandling.
